Postpartum lactation and micronutrient context

Moringa (Moringa oleifera)

Ingredient detail

Ingredient context

Moringa's evidence base for lactation support is close behind Shatavari's, and arguably even more extensively studied.

Evidence context

A systematic review and meta-analysis covering eight randomised controlled trials found that Moringa supplementation increased breast milk volume by as much as 400mL per day compared to controls, with a corresponding significant rise in serum prolactin, the hormone directly responsible for milk synthesis. Individual trials have varied in effect size, with some finding large, statistically significant increases and a few finding more modest, non-significant trends, which the review's authors honestly acknowledge in calling for further standardisation of dosing and duration. Beyond lactation, Moringa leaves are exceptionally dense in iron, calcium and Vitamin A, giving the herb a secondary role as a general postpartum micronutrient source.
